Keep it moving ? Conserving Kinetic Art

July 1, 2016

Communication sur la collection Nicolas Schöffer et sa conservation : "Nicolas Schöffer's collection : From the artist's studio to the museum" à  la conférence Keep it moving ? Conserving Kinetic Art , organisée par le groupe MMCA (ICOM-CC) et le Getty

The collection of Nicolas Schöffer's artworks is composed of cybernetic art performing aesthetic interaction with its environment. This paper investigates the transition process of the artist's studio to the museum from the conservator¿s role perspective, at relational and practical level. The first is required for the transmission of the artist's intent and the "studio knowledge". The second concerns practical challenges for past and future conservation. Working together with the different stakeholders, this is a delicate exercise of transmission in which the conservator¿s role is critical to keep the continual existence of these artworks in their new environment.
